Tetrahydrofuran, also known as oxocyclopentane or 1,4-epoxybutane, is a heterocyclic organic compound with the chemical formula C4H8O. It belongs to the ether class and is a completely hydrogenated product of furan. It is a colorless and transparent liquid that is soluble in water, ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene, etc. It is mainly used as a solvent, intermediate in chemical synthesis, and analytical reagent.

Used as a medium polarity non proton solvent in chemical reactions and extraction. Tetrahydrofuran is a colorless, low viscosity liquid with an odor similar to ether. Tetrahydrofuran easily turns into a peroxide during storage. Therefore, commercial tetrahydrofuran is often prevented from oxidation by using BHT, which is 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol. Tetrahydrofuran can be stored in a dark place by placing sodium hydroxide in a sealed bottle.

It is an important organic and fine chemical raw material, widely used in resin solvents (magnetic tape coatings, PVC surface coatings, cleaning PVC reactors, removing PVC films, fiberglass coatings, plastic printing inks, thermoplastic polyurethane coatings); Reaction solvents (format reagents, alkyl alkali metal compounds and aryl alkali metal compounds, aluminum hydride and boron hydride, steroid compounds and macromolecular organic polymers); Chemical intermediates (polymerization to generate PTMEG, natural gas flavoring agents); Chromatographic solvent (gel permeation chromatography).
Tetrahydrofuran has the characteristics of low toxicity, low boiling point, and good fluidity.
